Harvard system of referencing

Harvard Referencing employs the method of including references to cited works within the text of your essay in parenthesis, as opposed to using footnotes. When you prepare your bibliography, ensure that the textual reference is easily identifiable. There are two ways of doing this: 

* Brown (2008, p. 43) suggests that 'referencing should always be clear'.
* It is agreed that 'referencing should always be clear' (Brown, 2008, p. 43).

However, if you refer indirectly to an author's ideas, it should be referenced like this:
It is agreed that clear referencing is essential in academic work (Brown, 2008).
To cite books in a bibliography using the Harvard Referencing System you should adhere to the following criteria: 

1.  Author - in the form of surname and name/initials followed by a comma
2.  Publication date, followed by a full stop
3.  Title in italics followed by a full stop
4. Place of publication followed by a colon
5.  Publisher followed by a full stop.

Thus, the citation of a book in Harvard would read like this: 

Brown,J., 2008. Referencing Styles. Oxford: Oxford University Press.
Islam, M. 2016. Customes’ Outlook towards IBBL Limited. Nilkhet: Monir Publications
Belle, A (1932) The modern theory, New York: Mcmilan

"References" or "Bibliography".

At the end of an academic paper, you will find a section titled either "References" or "Bibliography". Although many authors fail to distinguish between the two labels, they do mean different things. A bibliography encompasses all works you consult in writing your paper, whether or not you quote the authors of those works or refer to their ideas. A reference list should include only those works quoted or "referred to" directly within the context of your paper.A bibliography is a list of the references that you consulted. In other words, a reference is one item. A bibliography is a list of items.

Reference list is about what you have actually used in your assignment. Bibliography is everything you have read for your assignment, even if you haven't mentioned anything in your assignment from that book etc - it is the overall list of where you got your knowledge from whereas reference list is what you have quoted or paraphrased. 

Usually readers want the reference list only.


A letter of transmittal:

It is like a cover letter. Supervisor will accept and transmit it to dept.

A letter of transmittal introduces a document such as a report to the reader, typically with less formality than the report itself. As the writer, you have the opportunity to remind the reader of highlights of interest 

Scope of study

The scope identifies the boundaries of the study in term of subjects, objectives, facilities, area, time frame, and the issues to which the research is focused. What the author is going to cover in report is scope of study. Scope of study means like, how big with your study be? who will be affected by it, who will have to pay attention to it.

Think about a periscope on a submarine. It comes out of the water and provides the viewer with a limited view of the landscape. That’s what the scope of your report is for. You define what you’re going to talk about in the report (the landscape).
